AB 1732 came into effect in 2017, stating that all single stall restrooms in California must have all gender signage. Unfortunately, today a great majority of single stall restrooms do not have all gender signage and are not in compliance. Per the 2023 Trevor Project survey, transgender and nonbinary youth who reported having access to an all-gender restroom at school reported attempting suicide less than those who did not. While those same youth reported that 63% of their schools did not have all gender restroom access.
SB 760 School facilities: All-Gender Restrooms is a newer bill that APT had the honor to partake in sharing input on and editing before it was passed into law. This bill requires that each school district, county office of education, and charter school, including charter schools operating in a school district facility, maintain any combination of classes from kindergarten to grade 12, inclusive, to provide at least one all-gender restroom for pupil use at each of its school sites. The bill would require the all-gender restroom to meet certain requirements, including that it (1) has appropriate signage identifying the bathroom facility as being open to all genders, (2) is unlocked, unobstructed, and easily accessible by any pupil without requesting access from teachers, faculty, or school staff, and (3) is stocked with menstrual products, as specified. The bill would require the local educational agency to designate a staff member to serve as a point of contact for these purposes and to post a notice regarding these requirements in a prominent and conspicuous location outside at least one all-gender restroom. The bill would authorize a local educational agency to use an existing restroom to satisfy these requirements, as provided.
We are grateful for the above laws because some LGBTQIA+ students and folks, would rather retain their urine for entire days when out in public, rather than use a binary communal restroom. Retaining one's urine for long periods of time can result in pain, UTI's, bladder stretching, damage to pelvic floor muscles and kidney stones.
APT, partnered with H. Toji & Company, to make custom intersectional signage. Our signs are black versus the traditional blue. They are bilingual, in Spanish and English. Our signs also have a sink pictogram, along with the toilet pictogram, which helps those who are neurodiverse better comprehend what they have access to in the restroom. We also are excited to introduce our new custom made Pride All Gender restroom sign that will be sold all year round.
H. Toji & Company agreed to give back to APT, 10% of all proceeds from our referral customer's orders, to support the LGBTQIA+ community. We are incredibly proud to have H. Toji & Company as our official sign vendor. Sharon Toji is a legend who helped write the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
